Things to Know About Breast Implant Surgery

Breast implant surgery is a surgery used for the enlargement of breasts using artificial implants. Also called breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty. Breast augmentation can be considered if you are unhappy with the appearance of your breast and want to feel confident or can also be performed for rebuilding the breast after various breast conditions like breast cancer. The surgery involves the placement of breast implants under the breast tissue by making an incision.

Types of Breast Implants:

Things to Do Before the Procedure

The doctor may perform a physical examination. Inform your doctor about any medication consumed. Avoid smoking a few days before and after the procedure. 

The Procedure

Involves the surgical insertion of implants behind the breast tissue with the help of incisions; after the placement, the incisions are closed with sutures. Sometimes tubes may be placed underneath the breast to collect excess fluid or blood after surgery. If you have sagging breasts, you may need a breast lift along with breast augmentation. The process is performed under local anesthesia and takes around 1 to 2 hours. 

Recovery Phase: 

  1. The surgeon will recommend you wear compression bandages or a sports bra to support your breast during recovery. 
  2. Pain medications are given to help with relief and swelling. 
  3. You need to take a few days or weeks off work as advised by the doctor.
  4. Avoid lifting and strenuous activity for a few weeks. Keep your blood pressure and pulse in check.
  5. Follow up with an appointment with your doctor to remove stitches and drainage tubes if there.

Risks Associated With Breast Augmentation:
